No Time to be Lonely

Lonely Scarecrow was sitting on his fence post on a cool autumn day. He was on duty, trying to ward off crows so they stay out of the corn field. It was a very boring job but someone had to do it.

“I have the most boring job in the world,” said Lonely Scarecrow to himself. “It also doesn’t help that it is the loneliest job ever.”

The more Lonely Scarecrow thought about how boring and how lonely he was, the more boring and lonely he became.

“You know,” said his wife, Hazel. “There are things you can do so that you aren’t so bored and lonely.”

“Like what?” asked Lonely Scarecrow.

“You could listen to music,” said Hazel. “You could read a book. You could help fix things. There is so much you can do. There will be no time to be lonely.”

Lonely Scarecrow thought about what Hazel just said. It made perfect sense to him. The next day, Lonely Scarecrow was on duty again. He started feeling bored and lonely so he turned on the radio. He listened to some music and the music was so good that he started singing to it. He was enjoying himself very much.

“It is 3 in the morning,” said Hazel, waking up to the sound of Lonely Scarecrow’s voice. “The baby is sleeping. You are going to wake everyone up. Please stop singing. Why don’t you read a book instead?”

“I don’t have to now,” said Lonely Scarecrow, giving Hazel a big hug.

“You might need to if you get bored and lonely again,” said Hazel.

“I have you to talk to right now,” said Lonely Scarecrow. “I’m not bored or lonely right now.”

“I’d better put the coffee on,” said Hazel. “This is going to be a long night.”
