Spot’s Spring Hat
”Oh look!” exclaimed Spot. ”Jenny left her magazine here.”
Jenny was at the barn a few minutes earlier. She had left a fashion magazine on the railing of Spot’s stall.
”Let’s look at it,” said Fawn.
”No Fawn,” said Spot. ”It’s not ours.”
”That doesn’t matter,” said Fawn. ”We aren’t going to wreck it or anything like that.”
”No we’re not,” agreed Spot. ”I suppose it won’t hurt to look at it.”
Fawn grabbed the magazine off the railing.
”Be careful,” said Spot.
”Oh alright!” exclaimed Fawn.
Fawn quickly looked through the magazine.
”There’s nothing here but ugly girl’s clothes!” Fawn exclaimed, throwing the magazine down on the barn floor.
”Fawn!” exclaimed Spot. ”I told you to be careful.”
Spot bent over and quickly picked the magazine up.
”I’m going outside!” exclaimed Fawn.
”Suit yourself,” said Spot, too interested in the magazine to care.
Fawn left and went outside. He saw Ricky Hansen standing in the field.
”Hey Ricky,” said Fawn, playfully nudging him from behind.
”Hi Fawn,” said Ricky. ”What are you doing out here? Where is Spot?”
”Spot is in the barn, looking at that silly magazine that Jenny left in the barn,” said Fawn.
”Girls are pretty dumb,” said Ricky.
”Yeah they are,” agreed Fawn.
Ricky and Fawn stood talking for a little while longer.
”Well,” said Ricky finally. ”I have to go.’
”Okay,” said Fawn. ”See you later.”
Fawn went back into the barn and saw the magazine lying flat on a nearby table. Spot was sitting in the middle of the barn floor with her piggy bank, counting her money.
”What are you doing?” asked Fawn.
”l want to buy a pretty hat that l saw in the magazine,” said Spot. ”It is so pretty!”
Fawn went over to where the magazine was and took a look at the page that Spot had open. What he saw was the most hideous pink straw hat that he had ever seen.
”That hat!” exclaimed Fawn. ”It is so ugly!”
”Men have no taste,” exclaimed Spot.
Fawn stalked out of the barn. Spot counted her money until she had enough and then she took the money and the magazine up to the house.
“Hi Spot!” said Jenny, when she saw Spot on the front porch. “Oh, I see you found the fashion magazine.”
“Yes, I did,” said Spot. “Jenny, I was wondering if you could order that beautiful spring hat that’s in the magazine. I have enough money!”
“Sure I could,” said Jenny.
Spot left Jenny and went back to the barn leaving Jenny with the magazine and the money.
A few days later, there was a knock at the barn door. It was Jenny carrying a package.
“It’s here!” exclaimed Spot excitedly, tearing the wrapping off the package as quickly as she could.
“Oh my!” exclaimed Jenny, as she helped Spot tie the hat on her head. “It’s a beautiful hat!”
“Yes it is!” exclaimed Spot looking in the mirror that hung on the back of the barn door. “What a nice hat!”
Spot went outside with her new hat on.
“You look nice!” exclaimed Fawn. “Where did you get the nice hat?”
“I ordered it out of that magazine,” said Spot.
“You couldn’t have,” said Fawn. “The hat in that magazine was ugly.”
