The Brown Family’s Butcher Shop
“Well, today is an important day for you,” said Mother, when Bobby the Butcher came down the stairs.
“Yes,” said Bobby. “Today is the official opening of ‘The Brown Family’s Butcher Shop’.”
“I am so proud of you,” said Mother. “I know your dad would be too. I know he would have loved to see his only son run his family business.”
“I know,” said Bobby. “I really miss him.”
“It will be a tough day for Aunt Jessica,” said Mother. “She was always shunned by the family.”
“It was because of her witchcraft,” said Bobby. “I am sure that if she gave that up, Grandfather wouldn’t have cut her out of the will.”
“Yes,” said Mother. “That is very true. I am very proud of you for offering your Aunt Jessica a job.”
“I am actually looking forward to working with her,” said Bobby.
Bobby was ready to leave the house for his first official day of owning the butcher shop. However, Mother called him into the living room.
“I want you to have this,” said Mother, handing Bobby something wrapped in a purple velvet case. “Your dad would want you to have it.”
Tears came to Bobby’s eyes when he unwrapped the case and saw the familiar knife.
“This was Dad’s butcher knife,” said Bobby, admiring the bright, shiny knife.
“Yes,” said Mother. “Your dad wanted you to have it. I have been waiting for the right time to give it to you. There will never be a moment that would have meant so much to your dad as this very day.”
“I am so honoured,” said Bobby, wiping tears from his eyes with the sleeve of his jacket.
“Good luck today,” said Mother, handing Bobby a tissue.
“You are coming to the opening,” said Bobby. “Aren’t you?”
“I think it might be too awkward for Aunt Jessica if I show up,” said Mother. “I don’t want anything to spoil this very important day.”
“I was going to wait until the grand opening to ask you this,” said Bobby. “But, I am just going to go ahead now and ask you. Mother, this is ‘The Brown Family’s Butcher Shop. I want all members of our family to work with me to make this the most successful butcher shop ever. Mother, I would love it if you would work with me too.”
“Oh dear,” said Mother. “I would love that.”
“Okay,” said Bobby, happily. “You are the new general manager.”
“Thank you Bobby,” said Mother. “I am going to love being in the work force again. I haven’t worked since your dad passed away. Thank you, son.”
Mother quickly dressed and went to the grand opening with Bobby. Aunt Jessica was already there.
“You two have done a lot of work getting the shop ready for this day,” said Mother. “It looks amazing.”
“Thank you Mary,” said Aunt Jessica. “This is a very important day for the Brown family. The day has finally come when the Brown family can put an end to our long-standing family feud. We can finally work together and build our family’s business into the empire it should have been.”
“I have hired Mother as our general manager,” said Bobby. “Aunt Jessica, you are going to be our accountant/receptionist.”
“Welcome aboard,” said Aunt Jessica, giving Mother a hug. “This is perfect. Our family business will thrive.”
“Thank you,” said Mother. “I am really happy that Bobby asked me to work here.”
Bobby turned the key to the butcher shop and then he stood behind the counter, with Dad’s butcher knife in his hand.
“You look like your dad,” said Aunt Jessica. “I see you have your dad’s knife.”
“Yes,” said Bobby, holding onto the knife dearly. “Mom gave it to me.”
Bobby could see a radiant glow coming from the knife as he held it.
“That knife is right where it belongs,” said Aunt Jessica, proudly.
