Raymond the Railroad Conductor – Character Insight

I created Raymond the Railroad Conductor as part of my Canadian Trades/Professions Character Challenge. We depend on our railroad conductors in Canada to make sure railway passengers arrive safely to their destinations.

Raymond the Railroad Conductor’s job is super important! He works on the railway, which is like the backbone of our country. It helps us move people and freight from one side of Canada to the other.

Being a railroad conductor is pretty cool. It’s like being the captain of a train. But it’s not for everyone. You see, Raymond spends a lot of time away from home. Sometimes he’s gone for weeks! That can be lonely, especially when you miss your family.

But there are perks too! Raymond gets to travel a lot. He hops on trains and goes to different places. He meets all sorts of people! Some are chatty, some are quiet, but Raymond is always kind and polite to everyone. That’s important when you’re dealing with passengers.

Raymond’s grandpa used to work on the railroad too. He shipped goods all over the country. But Raymond wanted to be different. He wanted to be up front, where the action is. Instead of moving freight, he wanted to help people get where they needed to go.

Raymond was married once, but his wife got sick and passed away. They have two grown-up kids, Samuel and Timothy. Raymond missed a lot of their growing up because of his job but, he worked hard to provide for them.

Now, Raymond hopes maybe Samuel or Timothy will follow in his footsteps but, Samuel is studying politics in university, and Timothy is in a rock band! So working on the railroad might not be their thing.

Even with the challenges, Raymond loves his job. He gets to meet new people all the time, and that makes him happy. You’ll often see him smiling or humming a tune as he goes about his conductor duties.
