Mother’s Day

“Good morning Mommy,” said 7 year old Sally, cheerfully. “How come you aren’t up yet?”

“I just feel like sleeping in this morning,” said Mommy.

Sally walked over to her mother’s bed and sat down beside her.

“Here,” said Mommy, pulling the blankets back a little. “Jump in here with me.”

“Well, well,” Daddy said, walking into the bedroom carrying a breakfast tray. “What have we here? My two favourite girls are hiding on me!”

“How come you brought Mommy’s breakfast up here?” asked Sally. “Are you sick Mommy?”

“No, Mommy’s not sick,” said Daddy. “Today is Mother’s Day.”

“Mother’s Day!” exclaimed Sally, horrified. “I forgot all about it!”

Sally leaned over and gave her mom a big hug and kiss.

“Happy Mother’s Day, Mommy!” she said.

“Thank-you, dear,” said Mommy, returning the hug and the kiss. “Now, let’s see what Daddy brought us for breakfast.”

“I’ll be right back, Mommy,” said Sally. “I’ve got to go get something.”

“I wonder what that was all about,” said Daddy, once Sally left the room. “Anyway, Happy Mother’s Day, dear.”

Sally went into her bedroom and sat down on her bed.

“What am I going to give Mommy for Mother’s Day?” she asked herself. “I don’t have any money, so I won’t be able to buy her anything. I have to give her something very special. Wait, I’ve got my birthday money. Maybe I could use that and take Mommy and Daddy out for supper! We could go to McDonald’s. That’s my favourite restaurant! Yeah, that will be fun!”

Quickly, Sally got her birthday money out of her dresser drawer. She found an envelope and a piece of paper. She sat down and made Mommy a Mother’s Day card and put the money inside it. Then she carefully put the card into the envelope and signed her name to the front of it.

Proudly, Sally walked back into Mommy and Daddy’s room with her hands behind her back.

“Here Mommy,” said Sally, handing the envelope to her.

Mommy opened the envelope. She was amazed when she saw the card that Sally had made for her.

“What a beautiful card this is!” exclaimed Mommy. “Thank-you Sally.”

“Mommy, you have to look inside the card,” said Sally, smiling.

Opening the card, Mommy found a ten dollar bill.

“Well look at this,” said Mommy, holding it up in the air. “I could get rich, if this keeps up.”

“That’s my birthday money,” said Sally. “I was thinking that since I don’t know what I want to buy with it, I thought that maybe I could buy supper for you and Daddy.”

“What a wonderful little girl you are,” said Mommy, with tears in her eyes.

“You sure are, Sally,” said Daddy, giving her a well-deserved hug.

“Where do you want to go for supper?” asked Mommy.

“How about McDonald’s?” asked Sally.

“McDonald’s it is,” said Daddy.

Sally, Mommy and Daddy had a wonderful dinner that night. Sally just about had enough money to pay for the whole meal, too!

“Sally, come here,” said Daddy, when Sally was all finished eating her hamburger. “I’ve got something for you.”

Daddy gave Sally a five dollar bill.

“You don’t have to give me that,” said Sally. “I almost had enough money to pay for it.”

“Well this isn’t for supper,” said Daddy. “It’s for dessert. You go on up to the counter and get yourself a great big ice-cream cone.”

“Really,” said Sally, her eyes a mile wide.

“Certainly,” said Mommy. “And Sally, thank-you for giving me such a wonderful Mother’s Day!”
