Gossip

“Mrs. Jones,” said Patricia, opening her front door to see her neighbour standing there. “Please come in.”

“Thank you,” said Mrs. Jones, taking her coat and scarf off. “What a windy autumn day we are having!”

“This is just our typical autumn day here in Lethbridge,” said Patricia. “Can I get you a cup of tea?”

Mrs. Jones saw Rusty, Patricia’s dog, sitting in the corner. Patricia didn’t let on but she saw Mrs. Jones scowl at Rusty. Patricia knew Mrs. Jones didn’t like dogs.

“I would love a cup of tea,” said Mrs. Jones. “When did you get a dog?”

“We got Rusty a few weeks ago,” said Patricia. “He actually found us.”

“Have you put any ads up?” asked Mrs. Jones. “Somebody must own him.”

“Oh we have,” said Patricia. “We had no response.”

“Somebody must own that mutt,” said Mrs. Jones.

“We own him now,” said John, Patricia’s husband, who just walked into the kitchen from outside.

“Dogs are so dirty and so expensive to raise,” said Mrs. Jones.

John stood behind Mrs. Jones and made faces when she talked. Rusty saw what John was doing. He inched closer and closer to Mrs. Jones’ chair.

“Well,” said Mrs. Jones. “I just wouldn’t take a stray dog in. Anyway, did you hear about the King family? Gloria is leaving James. Oh, that poor, poor man. Did you hear that their oldest son had a run in with the law?”

All of a sudden, Rusty jumped up onto the arm of the chair Mrs. Jones was sitting on. He started licking Mrs. Jones on her face.

“Please get this mutt off me,” cried Mrs. Jones.

Patricia and John were both about to burst out laughing but they both knew that would have been rude. John did finally tell Rusty to stop but not after Rusty got his fair share of licks in.

“Oh dear,” said Mrs. Jones, regaining her composure. “That dog is trouble.”

Mrs. Jones grabbed her coat and scarf and headed toward the door.

“I have never been so disgusted in my life,” said Mrs. Jones, slamming the door as she left.

Patricia and John burst out laughing. They knew they should have disciplined Rusty for his behavior but they just couldn’t.

“I guess Rusty likes gossip about as much as we do,” said John, still laughing.
