Field of Poppies

“Mary,” said Veteran Phil. “What is that you are working on?”

“A surprise,” said Veteran Phil’s wife, Mary, trying to hide the canvas she was working on.

“I see,” said Veteran Phil, trying to peer around to see what it was she was painting.

“You’d better not see,” said Mary. “The surprise is for you.”

“In that case,” said Veteran Phil. “I won’t bother you any longer. However, we do have to leave soon. We don’t want to be late for my award ceremony.”

“Of course we don’t,” said Mary.

Veteran Phil and Mary went to the award ceremony. Veteran Phil was honoured to receive his award. It really meant a lot to him. He was also surprised at everyone from Storyland that showed up.

“That was a very nice award ceremony,” said Veteran Phil.

“It was,” said Mary. “Now I can give you your surprise.”

Mary handed Veteran Phil a gift wrapped package. Veteran Phil was shocked when he saw what was inside. It was a painting Mary had done of a field of poppies.

“This is beautiful,” said Veteran Phil. “I love it.”

“It is for my hero,” said Mary.

“I’m no hero,” said Veteran Phil.
