Fear of No Rain

Living in a desert definitely has its challenges. The Desert Kid knows the challenges and lives with them each and everyday of his life. The Desert Kid was born and raised in the desert.

Most of the challenges the Desert Kid faces is nature related. For instance, he lives with constant temperatures in the high 30`s and 40`s. This may seem cold to some but you have to realize that those temperatures are Celsius, not Fahrenheit. The reason for this is because the Desert Kid lives in Canada’s only desert, the Okanagan Valley in the province of British Columbia. Therefore, when you convert 30 to 40 degrees Celsius to Fahrenheit, you get temperatures in the 90’s and early 100’s.

The desert is very hot and because of the heat, it is also very dry. It is nothing to see a dust storm swirling around at any given time. Because of the extreme heat and dryness, it is not unusual to have little or no rain for weeks on end. The Desert Kid prays for rain to come. It is not only dust storms that can occur because of the lack of rain in the desert, but also fire. The Desert Kid fears fire more than anything else. Fire in a desert means nothing but trouble. With everything being so dry, it is easy for fire to spread rapidly.

When the Desert Kid does pray for rain, he also prays that the rain will come without lightning. Lightning strikes in a dry desert can cause fire and a desert fire is very hard to deal with because of the constant blowing winds and dry grass and brush around it.
