Fawn and Spot Go on a Picnic

“Spot, what are we going to do today?” asked Fawn.

“I don’t know,” said Spot. “It is so hot outside, I think that maybe we should just stay right here.”

“Oh Spot!” exclaimed Fawn. “We can’t do that. It would be better if we did something exciting.”

“Alright Fawn!” exclaimed Spot. “What have you got on your mind?”

“How would you like to go on a picnic?” asked Fawn.

“A picnic,” said Spot. “I don’t know Fawn. I’ve never been on a picnic before.”

“Either have I,” said Fawn. “Let’s do it.”

“I don’t know about that,” said Spot. “Whenever you decide to do something, we always end up getting into trouble.”

“That might be true sometimes,” said Fawn. “Honestly, Spot, what kind of trouble could I get into at a picnic?”

“I’m not sure,” said Spot. “I’m not sure that I even want to find out.”

“Oh come on,” said Fawn. “It will be fun. You could make me some of your famous potato salad and I will go and find a few cans of orange pop.”

“I don’t know why I’m doing this,” said Spot. “Alright, let’s go on a picnic!”

Fawn went up to the main house. Sometimes the Hansen children leave him a few cans of orange pop, there. After searching for almost half an hour, he could not find a single can anywhere.

“Now that is strange,” said Fawn. “Ricky and Jenny know how much I like to drink orange pop.”

Fawn spotted a shady maple tree and decided that he would rest for a few minutes. He didn’t realize that he was as tired as he was. Within seconds he was fast asleep. Spot was in the barn. She had just finished making the potato salad that Fawn liked so much.

“I wonder what is taking Fawn so long?” asked Spot to herself. “He should have been back by now.”

She packed the potato salad into the cooler and decided that she had better go and find him.

“Fawn! Fawn!” Spot called out. “Fawn! Come on Fawn! The potato salad is all made!”

Usually when Spot mentions food of any kind, Fawn comes running.

“Now this is strange,” said Spot. “He always comes running when I mention food.”

Ricky and Jenny Hansen came out onto the porch.

“What’s wrong?” asked Jenny, when she saw the worried look on Spots face.

“I can’t find Fawn,” cried Spot. “He came up here to get a couple of cans of orange pop for our picnic and I haven’t seen him since.”

“Orange pop,” said Ricky. “Oh, I forget to leave him some!”

“Oh no!” exclaimed Spot. “If he couldn’t find any orange pop here, who knows where he would go to get some.”

“I’ll go get Dad,” said Ricky.

Soon Mr. and Mrs. Hansen appeared with the pick-up truck.

“Hop in the back, Spot,” said Mr. Hansen. “There’s no sense you sticking around here by yourself. We may need your help in town.”

“In town,” thought Spot to herself. “Oh no, Fawn. What have you done now?”

Spot and the Hansens drove all around town. They could not see Fawn anywhere.

“Oh Fawn!” Jenny cried. “Where are you?”

“Well, I was hoping that we wouldn’t have to do this,” said Mr. Hansen. “We are going to have to and go see Chief Lewis. He probably has Fawn locked up in one of those little jail cells.”

“Oh, I hope not,” thought Spot. “Poor Fawn!”

Mr. Hansen pulled the truck into the parking lot of the police station. Chief Lewis just happened to be walking over to his car.

“Hello Chief Lewis,” said Mr. Hansen, nervously.

“Well, Hansen,” said Chief Lewis. “Good day to be out and around, isn’t it?”

“Yes, it is,” said Mr. Hansen. “Look, my cow is missing again. I’m wondering if maybe you have seen him.”

“No,” said Chief Lewis. “This time, I haven’t seen him. If I happen to run into him I’ll tell him that you are looking for him.”

“Thank you,” said Mr. Hansen. “I really appreciate it.”

“No need to thank me,” said Chief Lewis. “If I do see that cow, he will be going straight to the livestock barns.”

“Oh no,” said Mrs. Hansen, once her husband had driven away. “That man is impossible! What are we going to do?”

“Well, I think that we should go home and wait,” said Mr. Hansen. “There’s not much more that we can do.”

The Hansen’s drove into the driveway. Everyone got out of the truck with tears running down their cheeks.

“Oh poor Fawn,” cried Ricky. “That big mean old Chief Lewis will take him away if he catches him.”

Everyone heard a rustle from behind the maple tree.

“Fawn!” cried Spot. “It’s you. Where have you been?”

“I fell asleep behind the maple tree,” he said. “What’s all the commotion about?”

“Oh nothing,” said Mr. Hansen. “Nothing at all.”

“Well that’s good,” said Fawn. “Let’s go on our picnic now, Spot.”

“I’ve got a better idea,” said Mr. Hansen. “Everyone hop in the truck and we’ll all go on a picnic together.”
