The Hollow Tree Mystery

Storyland Canada – Corners – Spot

Spot lifted her head from the patch of clover near the forest edge, ears pricked forward. Fawn had wandered off again this morning, and though her partner always came back eventually, Spot couldn’t shake the worry that settled in her chest like a stone.

But before she could decide which direction to search, Racum Raccoon appeared from behind a massive oak tree with a high hollow in its trunk. He wrung his paws together, his masked face twisted with distress. “Spot! Oh, thank goodness I found you,” he said, his voice tight. “I’ve lost something precious near that old hollow tree over there, and only your sharp eyes can find it.” He gestured toward a weathered trunk with a dark opening at its base.

Spot tilted her head. “What did you lose?” she asked gently. Racum looked away, shuffling his feet. “I can’t say,” he muttered. “But it’s very important. Will you help me look?” Spot glanced back toward the meadow where Fawn had disappeared, her worry tugging at her. Yet Racum’s desperation was real, and helping him might only take a moment.

She walked slowly around the hollow tree, her eyes scanning every inch of bark and leaf litter. There, caught in a crack where the wood had split, something glinted. Spot leaned closer and saw a slender sewing needle, polished metal catching the morning light. She plucked it free with her teeth and brought it to Racum, who snatched it up with a gasp of relief. “My friend’s needle,” he breathed. “Thank you, Spot.” He scurried up into his oak before she could ask more, leaving her alone with her own search still ahead.
