A Basket Before Sunrise
Storyland Canada – Corners – Easter Bunny – Chapter 2

Easter Bunny pulled the first basket from the stand and set it on the ground before him. The sky showed the first thin line of gray along the eastern horizon. He checked his list—the first name waited at the top, written in his careful script. Somewhere in Storyland, that person would be waking soon, expecting nothing.
He needed something to paint on, something to turn into an egg. His cottage held everything he’d prepared, but the door stayed locked. He scanned the clearing and spotted a smooth stone disc half-buried in the soil near the garden. He pulled it free and brushed off the dirt. It fit perfectly in his paw—round and flat like the eggs he would have painted. He had no paints, but he could still make it beautiful. He tucked the disc into the basket and added a golden chocolate bunny from his vest pocket. Two gifts, gathered without a single locked door standing in his way.
But where would he leave the basket? He didn’t know where the first person lived. His list had names, not addresses. He felt panic flutter under his ribs until he noticed a stone arch covered in spring flowers at the edge of the clearing. Brass bells hung from its center, chiming softly in the dawn breeze. The arch hadn’t been there yesterday. It appeared the same way his baskets would appear—exactly when and where they were needed. He carried the basket to the arch and set it down beneath the flowers.
The bells chimed once, clear and bright. The basket vanished. Easter Bunny stepped back and pulled his list from under his vest. He drew a careful line through the first name. Seven baskets left. The sun hadn’t risen yet, but spring had already reached someone. He turned back toward the stand, his heart fuller than it had been a moment before. He could do this without his supplies. He could do this with whatever the world offered him.
