Meet Matilda the Witch

Matilda is a solitary potion-maker living near the forest in Storyland Canada – Seasons World. For decades, she has harbored a single obsession: to control the summer thermometer and wield the power that comes with it. She once memorized the recipe for a potion that would plummet temperatures to extremes no one has ever experienced—or so she believed. The problem is, she never fully learned it. She merely collected fragments from whispers, old books, and her grandmother’s kitchen.

Tonight, that pretense unravels. The potion cannot begin without the complete recipe, and the only place it exists is locked away in Granny Weatherby’s barn. Between her and that book stand two maddening obstacles: something is eating her rare moonbloom root before she can harvest it, and a raven has eluded every snare she’s set for three months. The cost of these failures shows in her face—she hasn’t slept properly in weeks. But Matilda is not the type to abandon her goals. By the time Summer Sun leaves her cottage with a mysterious smile, Matilda has made her choice: she will steal what she needs, even if it means breaking into a place where she’s already been chased away once.

Character Notes

  • Current Goal: Control over the summer thermometer—a decades-long obsession dating back to childhood
  • The Potion Problem: She once knew the recipe for a potion that would plummet the thermometer into extreme heat, but the knowledge is fragmented. She’s been pretending to remember it for years
  • Obstacles: Something is eating the moonbloom root (one ingredient with only one growing spot), and she’s been trying to trap a particular raven for three months without success
  • Sleep Cost: The unanswered questions about what eats her root and the raven’s constant escapes weigh on her, costing her sleep
  • The Barn: Granny Weatherby keeps a locked book of recipes in her barn—likely containing the complete potion formula. Matilda was chased out once already
  • Summer Sun: The character who currently controls the thermometer. She brought Matilda a teacake and, with careful ambiguity, suggested the location of the recipe book. Matilda doesn’t know if Summer Sun is helping or warning her
  • Point of No Return: By the end of her first chapter, Matilda has decided she must steal the recipe from Granny Weatherby, risking everything
