A Friendly Butterfly

It was a crisp, autumn morning, with the sun shining brightly through the golden leaves of the trees. Mabel Owl was perched on a branch, watching her friend, Mouse, with warm, gentle eyes.

“You are going to have so much fun today,” Mabel said, giving Mouse a warm hug. “And remember, don’t eat too much. I don’t want you to be sick.”

Luna Owl, Mabel’s cousin, fluttered down to join them, her wings beating softly. “Is Mouse going to his friend Timmy’s birthday party?” Luna asked, her big, round eyes shining with curiosity. “Bear is still too young for things like that.”

“Yes, Mouse is going to Timmy’s birthday,” Mabel replied. “I am a bit nervous though. This is the first time he will be away from me.”

“I am sure he will be fine,” Luna said reassuringly.

“You know, you have been so good with taking care of that teddy bear,” said Mabel. “I think it is time for you to find a real friend.”

“I am so excited,” Luna exclaimed, her voice trembling with anticipation. “Do you want to come with me? It would help pass the time until Mouse comes home. Let’s look down by the water. We might find a friend for me there.”

“I don’t think the water would be a good place to look,” Mabel cautioned gently. “You would want a friend like Mouse.”

“You think I would pick a fish or a snail for a friend?” shouted Luna.

Just then, before Mabel could say anything more, a beautiful butterfly landed on Luna’s shoulder. Its delicate wings fluttered softly, and its bright, colorful body shone like a jewel in the sunlight.

“I’m not stupid,” Luna said, not noticing the butterfly.

“I didn’t say you were,” Mabel replied, her eyes fixed on Luna’s shoulder.

The butterfly crept closer to the crook of Luna’s neck and snuggled right in. It was very content.

“I don’t think you need to look any further for a friend,” Mabel said, smiling.

“How is that fair?” Luna shouted, still not seeing the butterfly.

Mabel pointed to Luna’s shoulder.

“You already found your friend,” she said.

Luna looked down and saw the butterfly perched on her shoulder. Her face lit up with delight.

“Oh, look!” Luna exclaimed, her voice trembling with excitement. “A butterfly!”

“I think you’ve found a friend, Luna,” Mabel said, smiling.

Luna gently reached up to touch the butterfly’s delicate wings.

“Hello, little one,” she said softly.

The butterfly fluttered its wings, and Luna giggled with delight.

“I think we’re going to be great friends,” she said, smiling up at Mabel.

“I think you’re right, Luna,” Mabel said, her eyes shining with happiness. “You and your new friend are going to have a wonderful time together.”
