Matilda is a witch who lives near a forest, and she is working on a potion that would give her control over the summer thermometer. The brewing is not going well. One ingredient, moonbloom root, grows in only one spot, and something keeps eating it before she can harvest it. She does not know what. It costs her sleep. She also needs a particular raven, which she has been trying to trap for three months. It has slipped every snare. She still means to cage it alone and finish the potion.
