A New Autumn Friend

“I am going to find a new friend in Storyland this autumn,” said Mr. Red Leaf to himself, as a strong wind came and blew him from the maple tree he had called home since spring. He twirled and fluttered through the air, his crimson color glistening in the sunlight, until he landed softly on the forest floor.

“I will be your friend,” said Chester Chipmunk, filling his cheeks with acorns, preparing himself for the long winter ahead. He scurried up to Mr. Red Leaf, his bushy tail twitching with excitement.

“That would be wonderful,” said Mr. Red Leaf, his voice filled with gratitude. “I would like that very much. I just got blown down from that maple tree over there.”

“Unfortunately, it looks like winter is going to be here much sooner than we want it to,” said Chester Chipmunk, his eyes shining with concern. “But don’t worry, I’m happy to show you around and help you settle in.”

Mr. Red Leaf’s gaze wandered to Chester’s stuffed cheeks.

“Did I tell you I just fell…,” he caught himself before he started to repeat his story over and over again. “So, tell me about yourself. What do you do all day long?”

“At this time of the year, I go around and collect acorns,” said Chester Chipmunk, his voice filled with pride. “I collect them so I can store them for winter.”

“That is very interesting,” said Mr. Red Leaf, his curiosity piqued. “What do you do with them?”

“Eat them,” said Chester Chipmunk, his eyes twinkling with mischief.

“You must have to collect quite a few of them,” said Mr. Red Leaf, his imagination running wild.

“I can show you what I have so far,” said Chester Chipmunk, his tail twitching with excitement.

“I would love that,” said Mr. Red Leaf, his heart filled with wonder.

“Great,” said Chester. “Follow me.”

Mr. Red Leaf followed Chester to a hollow in an oak tree, a few feet away. Inside, he saw a stash of acorns, neatly arranged and stored away.

“That is a lot of acorns,” said Mr. Red Leaf, his eyes wide with amazement. “I am impressed.”

“I will be able to make it through the winter,” said Chester, his voice filled with satisfaction.

“I normally talk my hat off, but I have found that listening is so much better,” said Mr. Red Leaf, his gaze locked on Chester’s furry head.

“I would never have known what chipmunks do to prepare for winter,” he continued, his heart filled with gratitude.

“A lot of work goes into preparations,” said Chester, his eyes shining with pride. “But it’s worth it to have a warm and cozy winter.”

As the sun began to set, casting a golden glow over the forest, Mr. Red Leaf and Chester Chipmunk sat together, watching the stars twinkle to life in the night sky.

“Thank you for showing me around and being my friend,” said Mr. Red Leaf, his voice filled with appreciation.

“It was my pleasure,” said Chester Chipmunk, his tail twitching with happiness. “I’m glad we met.”

And so, Mr. Red Leaf and Chester Chipmunk sat together, enjoying each other’s company, as the winter snowflakes began to fall gently around them, covering the forest in a blanket of white.
