Book Description
On a sunny day at Cliffside Resort beach, Rick—known as the Neon Cop for his bright attire—discovers a distressed little girl named Julie sitting alone under a tree, clutching a ragged teddy bear. Her torn dress and muddy face suggest neglect, and Rick quickly senses something is wrong. Julie tells Rick she’s waiting for her mother, Sara Granger, who told her to stay put. As Rick gently questions her, he learns that Julie is five years old, her father has passed away, and she hasn’t eaten in a long time. Moved by her situation, Rick takes her to Lester’s Fried Chicken for a meal, where Julie eagerly devours her food and dessert. Despite the cheerful dinner, Rick grows increasingly concerned. Julie is exhausted, and Rick fears her mother may never return.
