Little Kittens

“Hey Fawn,” said Spot. “Have you seen all the kittens at the back of the barn?”

“What?” asked Fawn, angrily. “There are more little kittens that I haven’t seen.”

“Why are you so angry about the little kittens?” asked Spot. “They are adorable.”

“Adorable my foot!” exclaimed Fawn. “Have you ever been able to pick one up?”

“Well no,” Spot had to admit. “I haven’t. They run away just as soon as I come anywhere near them.”

“My point exactly,” said Fawn. “For two weeks now I have been trying to pet one and they just scurry off.”

“So that is why you don’t like them,” said Spot. “Just because you can’t pet them. That is silly.”

“But I want to pet one,” said Fawn. “I wanted to make friends with them.”

“Well,” said Spot, thinking. “I’ve got an idea. Why don’t we go into the barn with a bowl of cat food and see if we can’t get them to be friends with us.”

“Hey,” said Fawn. “Do you think it would work?”

“Would you make friends with someone if they were going to give you food?” asked Spot.

“Yes,” said Fawn. “I guess I would.”

Spot got a bowl of cat food ready and they both went down to the barn. As soon as they entered the barn, the little kittens scurried away.

“This isn’t going to work,” said Fawn, angrily.

“Here,” said Spot, pointing to a bale of hay. “Just sit here and be patient.”

“Okay,” said Fawn, thoroughly disappointed. “I bet they won’t come anywhere near us.”

“Shhhhh,” said Spot, putting her finger to her lips. “The little grey one is getting curious about us already.”

Fawn looked straight ahead and saw a little grey kitten poke its little head out from behind a piece of barn wood. Spot gently set the bowl of cat food down onto the floor in front of them. The little grey kitten looked over at Spot, and then looked over at Fawn and then looked over at the bowl of food.

The little grey kitten was not sure what to do but her hunger soon got the best of her. She started coming out toward the bowl. Fawn and Spot didn’t move a muscle as they watched the little grey kitten start to eat the cat food.

“Hi there,” said Spot, gently to the little kitten.

The little grey kitten poked her head up from the bowl and was going to bolt back to the safety of the board it had just come from, but when Spot spoke again, the kitten just stayed there.

“It is okay,” said Spot. “We just want to be your friend.”

“Yes,” said Fawn. “We just want to be your friend.”

The little grey kitten looked at both Fawn and Spot and then decided to go up to Fawn’s leg and rub herself against it. Fawn didn’t move an inch. He could feel the kitten purring.

“It is purring,” he said to Spot.

Spot reached out and pet the kitten on the back. The kitten purred louder. Fawn did the same thing. The kitten liked that so much that it got right up onto Fawn’s lap. Fawn sat there for a long time, the kitten on his lap, petting it.

From that day forward, Fawn and Spot became best friends with all of the little kittens on the ranch and they were both very happy about that.

Moral of this Story:

  • Sometimes animals are afraid of us.
  • Example: The kittens were afraid of Fawn and Spot.
