Lonely Scarecrow on a Lonely Autumn Night

“I am working the night shift tonight,” said Lonely Scarecrow.

“Yes,” said Hazel, his partner, rocking their baby to sleep in its cradle. “Dallas worked the morning shift.”

“He will be sleeping soon,” said Lonely Scarecrow. “He looked exhausted. I guess there were a lot of crows that he had to scare away.”

“There were a lot, “said Hazel. “Joshua and Penny were talking about making some more scarecrows. They don’t want any of the crows to steal their corn.”

“I don’t blame them,” said Lonely Scarecrow. “They have a good crop of corn this year.”

“True,” said Hazel, yawning, still rocking the baby.

“I guess you aren’t going to be able to stay up with me tonight,” said Lonely Scarecrow.

“I am afraid not,” said Hazel. “Once the baby is asleep, I will be going to sleep too.”

A few hours into his shift, Lonely Scarecrow had scared away all of the crows for the night. He sat on the fence post looking around him. He saw Hazel sleeping. He saw that the baby was sleeping. He saw that his friend, Dallas, was sleeping. He saw that even Joshua and Penny, the owners of the farm, were sleeping.

“I am so lonely,” said Lonely Scarecrow. “I have nobody to talk to.”

Lonely Scarecrow did everything he could to keep himself awake. He felt his eyes closing on him.

“Here is a cup of coffee for you,” said Hazel, who woke up because she knew Lonely Scarecrow would be lonely.

“I really appreciate this,” said Lonely Scarecrow.

Hazel sat up with Lonely Scarecrow for a few hours. Lonely Scarecrow was very happy and very grateful for Hazel. He leaned over and gave her a kiss.
