Summer Help

Hillbilly Bob was sitting outside of the grocery store on a wooden bench. It was in the hottest part of the day in the middle of summer.

Hillbilly Bob saw his elderly friend, Mrs. Jones, come out of the grocery store carrying several bags of groceries. Hillbilly Bob could see she was struggling with them. She had a long walk to her house and Hillbilly Bob knew she would never make it in this heat.

“Mrs. Jones,” called Hillbilly Bob getting up from the bench. “Come here and take a seat.”

“Oh no,” said Mrs. Jones. “I’ve got to get these groceries home. If I sit down right now, I will never get back up.”

“Just until I go around back and get my truck,” said Hillbilly Bob. “I will drive you home.”

“That is very kind of you,” said Mrs. Jones. “But I am sure you have better things to do.”

Hillbilly Bob didn’t listen. He went around the back of the grocery store and got his truck. He helped Mrs. Jones get in and then put all her groceries in the back of his truck.

“You are such a dear,” said Mrs. Jones, when he got into the truck and drove her home.

“It is much too hot to be outside today,” said Hillbilly Bob.

“It is,” said Mrs. Jones. “However, I had to pick up a few things.”

Mrs. Jones lived by herself with her cat, Henry. Her husband passed away several years ago. Hillbilly Bob helped her out whenever he could.

“I am making lasagna for dinner,” said Mrs. Jones, once Hillbilly Bob had all her groceries taken into the apartment for her. “Would you like to stay for dinner?”

“You are going to cook in this heat?” asked Hillbilly Bob.

“I am,” said Mrs. Jones. “I have a couple of fans that will get rid of the heat.”

“I have a better idea,” said Hillbilly Bob. “Sam’s Restaurant has lasagna. Why don’t I take you out for dinner?”

“That would be much too expensive,” said Mrs. Jones.

“It is on special,” said Hillbilly Bob.

“I will go on one condition,” said Mrs. Jones. “You let me pay. After all, you really helped me out a lot this afternoon.”

“Alright,” said Hillbilly Bob. “But, I will pay for dessert.”

“It is a deal,” said Mrs. Jones.

Hillbilly Bob and Mrs. Jones had a wonderful dinner together and when Mrs. Jones wasn’t paying attention, he paid for the entire meal, dessert and all.
